Note: This wine was tasted blind at Franciscan Estate, Napa Valley as part of a tasting of wines from the Icon Estates portfolio (owned by Constellation): Appearance: very dark purple. Nose: an overtly oaky nose with high alcohol that takes a while to settle down in the glass. Dark, even dried fruits (like prune) come to the fore. Palate: clearly high alcohol, big chewy tannic structure, medium acidity, more fruit on the palate than on the nose. With aeration becomes more complex. Conclusion: this was so dark-fruit dominated that I did think it might be a GSM blend from Australia in which Mourvedre had the upper-hand. I just couldn’t find the trademark blueberry fruit Shiraz usually shows. Apparently, there’s some Petit Verdot in here which probably explains the darker fruit spicy nose. Drink now to 2010, perhaps for longer. more
